Eaton MTL4541Y is a single-channel repeater power supply designed for 2-wire and 3-wire 4-20 mA transmitters installed in hazardous areas. It provides a fully floating DC supply to the field transmitter, reproduces the measured current in a separate safe-area circuit, and helps maintain galvanic separation between the process instrument and the control system. For HART-enabled 2-wire transmitters, MTL4541Y also allows bidirectional digital communication to travel on the same analogue loop.

How MTL4541Y Fits into the Signal Path

In a typical installation, the field transmitter measures pressure, flow, level, or another process variable and converts it into a 4-20 mA signal. MTL4541Y energizes that transmitter from the safe-area side while repeating the current to a DCS, PLC, recorder, or other receiving load. The floating input and output circuits help reduce unwanted interaction between field wiring and control-system grounding.

The module may also accept a separately powered current source, such as a 4-wire transmitter. In that arrangement, however, HART communication is not supported. This distinction should be reviewed before MTL4541Y is selected for a retrofit involving smart instruments.
