Versatile Pepperl+Fuchs KFD2-UFC-Ex1.D Universal Frequency Converter with Trip Values, Analogue Output, and Multi-Function Alarm Control

Pepperl+Fuchs KFD2-UFC-Ex1.D is more than a pulse isolator. It converts the switching frequency from a NAMUR sensor or dry contact into a scalable 0/4-20 mA output while also providing programmable trip functions. One module can therefore support speed indication, frequency-to-current conversion, limit monitoring, pulse division, and fault reporting in a hazardous-area measurement loop.

Operating range at a glance: the field input covers approximately 1 mHz to 5 kHz. This wide span allows the same converter family to serve very slow events as well as high-speed pulse sources, provided the sensor type, pulse width, threshold, and scaling are configured correctly.

Four Outputs from One Input Signal

KFD2-UFC-Ex1.D can make the incoming pulse information available in several different forms:

  • Two relay outputs for configurable limit or status functions.

  • One passive transistor output for electronic pulse or status transfer.

  • One freely scalable 0-20 mA or 4-20 mA analogue output.

The switch outputs can be assigned to minimum or maximum alarms, a pulse-divider function, series switching, or error indication. This combination is useful when a PLC needs a continuous speed signal while a separate relay must stop equipment at an overspeed or underspeed threshold.

Configuration at the Cabinet

A front display and keypad allow technicians to review the measured frequency, trip values, and configuration without dismantling the cabinet. More detailed setup can be carried out through the programming connection with PACTware. The start-up override can suppress an unwanted trip during acceleration or process start-up, while line fault detection monitors the field circuit for open- or short-circuit conditions when the selected sensor wiring supports that function.

Example Use: Rotating Equipment

Consider a NAMUR proximity sensor monitoring a shaft or gear wheel in a hazardous area. KFD2-UFC-Ex1.D receives the pulse train, isolates the field circuit, converts the frequency into a 4-20 mA speed value, and provides a relay trip if the speed leaves the permitted range. The transistor output may transmit a pulse train to a counter, while the second relay can report a sensor fault or a separate warning level. Similar arrangements are used for conveyor monitoring, fan speed, pump rotation, turbine-meter pulses, mixer shafts, and machine-cycle counting.

Commissioning Checklist

  1. Identify the input as a NAMUR sensor or mechanical contact.

  2. Record the normal, minimum, and maximum operating frequency.

  3. Define the engineering value represented by 4 mA and 20 mA.

  4. Set relay trip points, hysteresis, energization direction, and start-up delay.

  5. Confirm pulse-divider and transistor-output requirements.

  6. Test line fault detection and every output before returning the loop to service.

Ordering Notes

The exact designation KFD2-UFC-Ex1.D should be retained in the inquiry because similar frequency converters may differ in input approval, display, outputs, or programming options. Please provide quantity, destination, required delivery date, field-sensor type, frequency range, and any existing configuration record. A label photo is particularly useful for urgent cabinet replacement.
