PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Pepperl+Fuchs RD0-FB-Ex4 Four-Spur Fieldbus Barrier for Intrinsically Safe Segment Distribution

Pepperl+Fuchs RD0-FB-Ex4 is a four-output FieldConnex fieldbus barrier designed to connect an increased-safety trunk to intrinsically safe field-device spurs. The electronic component is supplied without a field enclosure and is intended for protected DIN-rail cabinet installation. It gives system designers a compact way to distribute one fieldbus segment while limiting energy on each spur for suitable hazardous-area instruments.

Where the Barrier Fits in the Segment

The trunk carries fieldbus power and communication from the power conditioner or host side. RD0-FB-Ex4 receives that trunk through Ex e terminals and provides four Ex ia outputs for connected field devices. Each spur is individually separated so a fault on one branch is less likely to disturb the remaining segment. This architecture is commonly used where several nearby instruments must share one FOUNDATION Fieldbus H1 or PROFIBUS PA segment.

A switchable terminator is integrated into the unit. It should be enabled only when the RD0-FB-Ex4 is located at the appropriate physical end of the fieldbus trunk. Incorrect termination can reduce communication quality even when the DC voltage appears normal.

Four Practical Design Questions

1. Is the mounting environment suitable?
RD0-FB-Ex4 is the electronic barrier component for DIN-rail installation in a cabinet. The enclosure must provide the required mechanical and environmental protection for the project location.

2. Is the trunk design Ex e?
Confirm trunk voltage, current, cable type, grounding method, and hazardous-area classification against the current Pepperl+Fuchs documentation and the approved segment drawing.

3. Are the four spurs within the entity or FISCO design?
Review the connected apparatus, spur cable length, capacitance, inductance, and permitted field-device count. Intrinsic safety depends on the complete loop, not only on the barrier model.

4. Is termination assigned correctly?
A fieldbus segment normally requires termination at its physical ends. Record the switch position before replacement and verify it during recommissioning.

Commissioning Priorities

  • Confirm the full code RD0-FB-Ex4 or RD0-FB-Ex4.COM.
  • Check trunk polarity, shield continuity, and protective-earth arrangement.
  • Measure segment voltage at the barrier and at each connected device.
  • Verify that each spur communicates independently.
  • Test the effect of a simulated spur short circuit where the project procedure permits.
  • Confirm the terminator switch position and document the final segment layout.

The standard RD0-FB-Ex4 uses the specified terminal arrangement, while the RD0-FB-Ex4.COM variant uses plug-in terminals. These codes should not be treated as interchangeable without checking wiring, cabinet layout, and project documentation.

Supply and Replacement Support

RD0-FB-Ex4 may be requested for refinery, chemical, oil and gas, pharmaceutical, power, water-treatment, and modular process projects using fieldbus instrumentation. For an accurate quotation, send the complete model, quantity, destination, required delivery date, and a product label photo. Segment protocol, enclosure details, and the installed terminal version are useful when checking a replacement request.

Sunup-MTL supports sourcing and international supply of Pepperl+Fuchs FieldConnex barriers, power conditioners, diagnostic modules, and related process-automation components. Final intrinsic-safety calculations and fieldbus commissioning must follow the approved project design.
